About the FPMT

The Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition is an international, non-profit organisation, founded in 1975 by Lama Thubten Yeshe (1935-84), a Tibetan Buddhist monk.

The Foundation is devoted to the transmission of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and values worldwide through teaching, meditation, and community service. We provide integrated education through which people's minds and hearts can be transformed into their highest potential for the benefit of others, inspired by an attitude of universal responsibility.

We are committed to creating harmonious environments and helping all beings develop their full potential of infinite wisdom and compassion.

Our organization is based on the Buddhist tradition of Lama Tsong Khapa of Tibet as taught to us by our founder Lama Thubten Yeshe and spiritual director Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

Lama Yeshe, with his closest disciple Lama Zopa Rinpoche, were the founders and spiritual heads of the FPMT.

They began giving teachings to Westerners at Kopan Monastery on the outskirts of Kathmandu in 1965. Gradually their students, wanting to continue their studies at home, invited the Lamas on teaching tours of the West.

Together the two Lamas inspired and guided a growing network of meditation and retreat centres and monastic communities around the world. Since its beginnings in 1971 the FPMT has grown to more than 142 Centres of various sizes and stages of development in 32 countries.

Lama Yeshe passed away in March 1984 and Tenzin Osel Rinpoche (born 1985 in Spain) was recognised as his incarnation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Lama Zopa Rinpoche is the spiritual director of the FPMT.
