Lama Yeshe, with his closest disciple Lama Zopa Rinpoche, were the founders and spiritual heads of the FPMT. They began giving teachings to Westerners at Kopan Monastery on the outskirts of Kathmandu in 1965. Gradually their students, wanting to continue their studies at home, invited the Lamas on teaching tours of the West. Together the two Lamas inspired and guided a growing network of meditation and retreat centres and monastic communities around the world. Since its beginnings in 1971 the FPMT has grown to more than 142 Centres of various sizes and stages of development in 32 countries. Lama Yeshe passed away in March 1984 and Tenzin Osel Rinpoche (born 1985 in Spain) was recognised as his incarnation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Lama Zopa Rinpoche is the spiritual director of the FPMT.
